  • Porsche has committed €1.25 billion ($1.46 billion) over five years to Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) under an agreement to expand the use of artificial intelligence across the German automaker.

Under the wider arrangement, TCS will acquire Porsche’s management and IT consultancy MHP at an enterprise value of €320 million ($373 million), the companies announced on Monday, August 24. The transaction requires regulatory and competition approvals and is expected to close within three to four months.

MHP employs more than 4,500 people and specializes in automotive and industrial consulting, AI, SAP, manufacturing digitalization and connected mobility. It will retain its brand and operate as an independent consultancy within TCS.

TCS will also establish an AI Mobility Centre of Excellence for Porsche. Its work will cover engineering, manufacturing, operations and customer experience, as well as automotive technology and software-defined mobility platforms.

The acquisition gives TCS a larger foothold in Germany and the European automotive market at a time when Indian IT firms are under pressure to show that AI can generate new revenue rather than simply reduce traditional outsourcing work.

TCS said its annualized AI revenue reached $2.6 billion in the June quarter, up 13.6% from the previous quarter, as clients increasingly shift spending toward automation and AI-led transformation projects.

For Porsche, the deal is part of a wider effort to simplify operations and improve profitability. The Volkswagen-owned sports-car maker has been cutting costs and narrowing its portfolio as European automakers contend with weaker demand, electric-vehicle spending and stronger Chinese competition.

“We are firmly aligning our company with our core business,” Porsche Chairman Michael Leiters said previously while outlining the company’s restructuring strategy.

TCS Chief Executive K. Krithivasan said the acquisition would allow the company to expand AI deployment across Porsche’s operations.

The agreement arrives as India’s $315 billion IT services industry faces a difficult transition. Clients are scrutinizing technology budgets while AI increasingly threatens labor-intensive outsourcing models that have long underpinned the sector.
