  • WhatsApp is introducing audio and video calling through web browsers as part of an update that also adds call transfers, waiting rooms and tools to improve sound and video quality.

The Meta-owned messaging service said users will be able to make and receive one-on-one and group calls directly through WhatsApp Web without downloading its desktop application.

Browser-based calls will include screen sharing, reactions and a dedicated Calls tab showing call history and favorite contacts. WhatsApp said the calls will remain end-to-end encrypted, with no time limits or additional charges.

The feature could be useful for people using shared computers or work devices that do not permit software downloads. Users will still need to connect their WhatsApp account to the browser.

WhatsApp is also adding a call-transfer feature that allows users to move an active group call between a phone, tablet, desktop application and web browser without ending the call.

The update includes a waiting-room option for group calls created through WhatsApp call links. Hosts who enable the “Require approval to join” setting will be able to review participants before admitting them to the call.

A new noise-suppression feature is designed to reduce background sound during calls in busy environments. Users can turn the setting on or off through the controls available during a call.

WhatsApp is also introducing QuickHD, which the company said will provide high-definition video within the opening seconds of a call rather than increasing quality gradually after the connection begins.

The company said the features are being introduced gradually and will become available to all users soon.
